Our first climate change and agroforestry meeting in Chikwela village

We had our first climate change awareness meeting today in Chongwe’s Chikwela village where villagers had a chance to learn about Leucaena tree and how it can benefit them.

We talked about how useful Leucaena can be in fighting drought and soil erosion as it can survive with very little water and if planted with crops can help hold the soil together at the same time fix the nitrogen in the soil.

We talked about its usefulness as fodder for ruminants like goats, cows and sheep because it is an evergreen tree whose leaves are nutritious for these animals.

We also talked about the benefits of agroforestry in general and why it is important to plant trees together with crops.

We are offering free Leucaena seedlings for the people in Chikwela village and 30 people registered to get seedlings in January to plant at their maize fields.
